CW Kenobi Progress + Armor Making

Post by Mauvais »

Outside of my ongoing CW Maul project, I've been working on two other costumes, Ahsoka Tano and Obi Wan! I'm currently exploring different armor options outside of thermoplastics such as worbla, thibra and my personal favorite, terraflex. The requirements across the board for armored builds indicate that foam isn't acceptable as-is, nor should it be. Once this cold snap lets up I'll take Kenobi's armor and Maul's legs outside to be primed and try some fiberglass. I've done some research and it looks like fiberglass is an acceptable alternative to other hardening methods for foam armor, so long as it doesn't erode the eva foam. The foam I use is always 5mm or thicker, so I'm not worried about the piece collapsing under the added weight.

Right now the entire ensemble is very unfinished, but I hope to have all the pieces cut out of foam today and heat primed. I am going to taper the bottom of the front and back panels of the chest piece and hopefully attach the collar without too much of a struggle. If I have some more time I'll begin the foam wig! I've watched these being made before for other costumes and I think that the overall look will be very stylized and recognizable like the animation. I did a makeup test not too long ago with a paper mock-up and loved it, so I'll continue this thread with finished pictures and more babbling about how I got there.

If anyone has some tips or suggestions with foam armor and fiberglass, I'd love your input! I've always stuck with thermoplastics. I have enjoyed watching the market for them grow, but i'm ready to try something new. Let me know if any of you are going to Motor City Comic Con! My sister will be dressed as Ahsoka and I'll be going with her as Obi. :D

Finished these builds and met some awesome garrison members at Motor City Comic Con! Thanks everyone!

Here are some pictures from the day as well as some detail/construction images of the builds. My sister has decided to push for taking this Ahsoka build for approval, so I’m going to finish this thread and make a build thread for the Ahsoka headpiece. I intend to make the process applicable to any Togruta or Twi’lek character.

I’m going to remake the wig and beard with synthetic wig hair but heavily stylized and see if that can be a possible CRL component, ‘likeliness to source material in the 3D model in the animated series.’ This was a great opportunity to test run the build itself as a foam costume and I can see how to improve mobility, scale and fit with the thermoplastic or fiberglass version I'd submit for approval in the future.

Thanks again, it is always a pleasure getting to see the 501st and Rebel Legion booths :D :D :D

I will try! I dramatically underestimated the amount of orange I needed...if the refill comes in time we’ll bring them back out! Otherwise we’ve got some cool padawan outfits we’ll bring :D Ahsoka and Obi will definitely be back around since they were too much fun.
