Important:Realistic Interpretations of Clone Wars characters

One of the things that our team has worked hard toward is consistency: We want an Imperial Crew costume to be treated with the same respect as Darth Vader, and we want to apply the same logic and rules to all aspects of Legion costuming.

We don't always succeed... we are, regrettably, only human. But we are always trying to improve!

As we go forward with the CRLs, we have been trying to clean up inconsistencies across detachments and costumes. The realistic clones from the Clone Wars have given us pause, and forced us to rethink our approval standards a bit.

Back in 2008, Lucasfilm launched The Clone Wars 3D animated series. In it we saw a stylized set of clone armor unlike what was seen in the live action films.

At the time, no kits were available for this sort of armor, and it was unclear whether or not it could even be done to the level required by the 501st.

But, there was no denying that Rex, Cody, Fox and friends were popular amongst both fans and troopers!

As a compromise, the 501st decided to allow Attack of the Clones style armor, but painted in the style of the Clone Wars characters.

Fast forward to 2012:

Animated style Clone Wars armor and accessories have become extremely popular. More and more troopers choose to go that route, vs. the armor from the films.

The CRL project has made huge advances, and people are looking more and more for defined standards to work off of.

In all other categories, we are extremely picky about the details: An Empire Strikes Back Vader can't have an A New Hope Helmet. Mara Jade must have the correct shin armor. An Imperial Officer needs the right belt buckle and rank badge.

The realistic clones from the Clone Wars stand out in stark contrast to these other reviews: Where a Vader would be deferred for minor discrepancies, the clones are approved with helmets and armor that have little or no supporting reference.

The matter is further complicated by all of the armor appearing in the Clone Wars with no Attack of the Clones / Revenge of the Sith analog: ARF, ARC, Stealth Pilots and more. It's clear that after 4 years of the show, The Clone Wars has established a full array of unique characters and costumes that just can't be compared to the live action films.

For those of you unfamiliar with the differences, please see this thread at clonetroopers.net: http://forum.clonetroopers.net/index.ph ... opic=15702

What then do we base the realistic clone CRLs on? The simple fact is that Attack of the Clones versions of Rex, Wolffe, Fox, Fives and the other clones just don't appear in enough official reference material to base any sort of standards on them.

In recognition of that, effective May 31 2012, we will no longer be approving any new realistic interpretations of characters from the Clone Wars.

This grace period allows those troopers who are working on costumes to finish them up and get them approved before the cutoff. We do not want to disrupt existing builds or cause members to waste their hard earned money because of a standards change.

Starting June 1 2012, only clones wearing armor, helmets and accessories consistent with the reference materials for their costumes will be approved.

GMLs: Please ensure that your members and recruits are aware of this policy change. If you have a member working on a realistic Clone Wars costume that might miss the 5/31 cut off date, please let us know as soon as possible.

Members: Please alert your GML if you have a work-in-progress realistic Clone Wars clone.

This does NOT impact anyone who is already approved.

Those costumes will remain in our roster until such time as the members retire them on their own. We have no desire to remove anyone from our ranks, we just want to conform to a consistent rule for all costumes going forward.

I know this will upset some of you, but we are confident that this is the most fair way to do things. We don't want one costume class to have leeway granted to it that is not shared by all of the other costumes in the Legion.

Please contact us with any questions or concerns and we will be happy to discuss.
