WTF (what the french)?
Why is my weight loss so slow?
I average 20 minutes 5 times per week on eliptical; 30 minutes 5 times per week on the recumbent, cut out bread to weekends (like only a sandwich on the weekend); protein shake EVERY morning; small meals 6 times per day (yogurt, protein shake, string cheese, banana, grapes, tiny bowl of cheerios, salad with deli meat and a medium dinner.
This is so so frustrating. I feel like I will never get back down to 115. I HATE being 40

OK, I am officially joining this effort. I joined Weight Watchers today and want to get down to 230-225. Anything I need to do besides track my weight by date to do this?

Re: Great Lakes Fitness Center
Rob from on WW to another....the program really does work just make sure you're journaling everything! The days or weeks I slacked off, I gained. If I was good at writing everything down, the pounds dropped. If you've signed up for meetings be sure you go. The accountability really helps with the weight loss too. Knowing that I had to weigh in and someone was going to help me accountable kept me on track. My leader reminds us, "If you bite it, write it. If you nibble it, scribble it. If you drink it, ink it."Freak Nasty Fester wrote:OK, I am officially joining this effort. I joined Weight Watchers today and want to get down to 230-225. Tips to keep on track...keep snacks handy and know the point value BEFORE you eat it. My friend called me after lunch a few weeks ago. She thought she did so good picking out a salad at a restaurant. Turns out that salad was 33 points! YIKES!! www.dwlz.com is an awesome website with points values for a number of the chain restaurants (beyond what you can find in the WW books).
If you exercise, you can get extra activity points that can be used (or not) during the week. Tony never ate his extra points and I think that helped with his weight loss.
It sounds crazy but be sure you're eating your minimum points every day. If you have a point or two left...find a snack and eat it. The program is designed to help you burn the proper amount of calories so be sure you're taking in the right amount to start otherwise your body will store what you've eaten and you won't see the weight loss expected.
Don't expect to lose everything overnight. 2 pounds a week is healthy and you can easily maintain that.
Good luck!!

Re: Great Lakes Fitness Center
I'd suggest mixing up your workouts by adding some weights. At 5x/week on cardio, your body might be getting accustomed to the workload and has made adjustments, knowing what's coming. When metabolism slows despite working out hard, it's one sign that the body has just gotten more efficient at doing the work.Stardust wrote:WTF (what the french)?

Try reducing the cardio to 3x/week (about 30 minutes, and increase the intensity, too, to see if that helps).
For weight training, a book that I've heard many good things about is "New Rules of Lifting for Women." It dispels many myths about weight training for women (chief among them the myth that weight training will result in grotesque female-body-builder appearances; not true -- women don't have the hormonal make-up for that to happen naturally). But weight training burns calories in different ways, and will also add to that tight/toned look that both men & women want to achieve.
So, in a way, you may have graduated and now need to push yourself harder

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
I will start that ASAP. It makes total sense. I will cut down to 3 times per week cardio at higher intensity and add the weight training. I do plan to thrown in a couple of days of 60 minutes pilates.
(any suggestions for toner abs/flatter mid sections?)
Again THANK YOU!!!
I'm off!!!!!!

Just time & diet, unfortunately (I say "unfortunately" because if there's a magic exercise or method, nobody's found it yet in the history of fitness! )Stardust wrote:(any suggestions for toner abs/flatter mid sections?)
It's like looking at a big mound of snow as it melts. While fat deposits accumulate unevenly, it all "melts" at the same rate all over, so the midsection only looks like the last to go only because there was more there to begin with.
Don't get discouraged. You're doing great, so keep it up!

Re: Great Lakes Fitness Center
Exactly what Rome said. "Spot reduction" is a total myth. You can only lose general body fat over your entire body, not lose it quicker in one area than another. Typically with females, they seem to lose weight from the head down most commonly.

Not to sound suggestive or anything, but don't weigh yourself dressed. Clothing can vary between 1-2 lbs. and either give false hope or false despondency. Weigh yourself naked, once a week and on the same day, same time.Freak Nasty Fester wrote:03/09/2010 292 (dressed)

Good advice that I believe is accurate, but I think it would have created quite a ruckuss at the Weight Watchers meeting!!!!Crimson wrote:Not to sound suggestive or anything, but don't weigh yourself dressed. Oh, yeah, that would be a different issue then, huh? Then an alternative would be to weigh yourself at home and use both results as a ballpark figure.

Or wear the same t-shirt and sweatpants/shorts to the meetings. My wife used to have a set of weigh in clothes for her WW meetings. It kept things consistent. Good luck with the weight loss Fester!

I am finding that I do great during the week, since I am on a set schedule (work, home, gym). But I really need to work on more self control over the weekends. We tend to go out a lot and I do not watch portion control like I should. I also tend to snack on not so healthy choices over the weekend. So my goal this weekend is to really pay attention to my portions and choose healthier snacks.

I need to get my butt back in gear big time. Been slack'n the last 3-4 weeks now. Eating junk from time to time. Not working out and not getting enough sleep. And I blame it all on Wags and Shimko. They force me to play xbox live at all hours of the night. And do some subliminal msg to me in my sleep and tell me to eat fast food and pizza.
